Inaugural Of The New Academic Year 2018-2019 & Felicitation Of Our Meritorious Students


St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School marked the commencement of the new academic year 2018-2019 with the concelebration of the inaugural mass followed by the felicitation of 301 meritorious students and state awardee, Mr. Newton Azevedo at the hands of His Grace, Most Rev. Felipe Neri Ferrao, Archbishop of Goa & Daman.

The Theme ‘Call to liberate ourselves and others to build a better society’ was befitting to the occasion. Ms. Nirmala Barretto in her introductory words thanked God for the Blessings in the past and prayed for a fruitful year ahead filled with love, peace, service, truth and justice, as Xavier’s family grows in the vision of the Lord.

With joyful gratitude and a grateful heart, His Grace Most Rev. Felipe Neri Ferrao in his meaningful Homily emphasized the need to dedicate our lives for the Kingdom of God, by building a community through relationships of service, mutual respect and love for one another. He said Our Education must free us from the shackles of selfishness, hatred, jealousy, anger, prejudice and corruption. Just as Jesus worked tirelessly for the marginalized and proclaimed to them liberty of the kingdom of God, so should we through our gifts, talents, hearts and time reach out to the marginalized and the economically, socially and emotionally poor in society.

His Grace, the Archbishop thanked the choir, the liturgy committee and the organizers for the wonderful celebration. The soulful magnificent prayer dance depicting the values of health, love, hope, faith and peace and the splendid butterflies depicting their phases in life in a beautiful scene, flying to their dreams captivated the hearts of the audience and set the right tone for the felicitation programme.

Fr. Herculano Costa Correia, Manager of St. Xavier’s H.S.S. accorded a formal welcome to the Chief Guest, the dignitaries and everyone gathered for the Inaugural cum Felicitation Programme. Father thanked the large gathering for their presence, cooperation and coordination in elevating St. Xavier’s H.S.S. to higher planes. He congratulated the achievers for their grand success and prayed for glory in the years to come.

Ms. Lorraine Da Costa had the privilege to introduce His Grace, Most Rev. Felipe Neri Ferrao to the audience. The dignitaries on the dais were presented tokens of welcome and appreciation in the form of fruit baskets, thereafter they were led to light the traditional lamp.

Principal Dr. Elvis Gonsalves commenced his formal address by extending a hearty welcome to the gathering. 44 glorious years he said, has been a long and enriching journey with each year bringing a new challenge. The hard work and strenuous efforts put in by the teaching and non-teaching staff has raised the standard of education in the Institution. He said that the marvelous performance and grand success of our students at the Board Exams is attributed to the role played by teachers as luminaries through their intellectual and moral guidance. He went on to say that academic excellence along with co-curricular activities have been our hallmark. Dr. Elvis was elated to announce that St. Xavier’s H.S.S. was declared as overall champions in sports for the 13th year in succession. It is also a moment of pride to be selected among 250 institutions in the country to house the Atal Tinkering Laboratory. The Principal said that our progress, growth and achievements in 44 years speaks volumes of the aura of glory in transforming our students into worthy citizens. Marking the commencement of this aura is an occasion to thank the Almighty for all that He has done to make this growth possible.

The Principals address was followed by the most awaited moment witnessing 301 meritorious students and our very own Physical Education Teacher Mr. Newton Azevedo being felicitated by the Chief Guest Archbishop Felipe Neri Ferrao.

The Vice-Principal of the general stream Ms. Magret Dias highlighted the contribution of Mr. Newton Azevedo. In her address to the gathering she congratulated him for receiving the Best Teacher’s State Award in Physical Education and thanked him for bringing glory to the Institution.

In reply Mr. Azevedo owed his success to the Xavier’s family, the DSE and his family and thanked them for their support and co-operation.

The Chief Guest, Archbishop Felipe Neri Ferrao in his address once again appreciated and lauded the achievements of the school in the field of academics, sports and cultural activities of the past. He was full of praise, as he congratulated the different committees for the wonderful organization of the entire function. Lastly our Archbishop advised the gathering to learn to be happy in every situation, be it failures or success and work towards building a better society. He expressed his profound gratitude to the entire Xavier’s family, wished them a fruitful and enriching academic year ahead and reminded them about their roles to be like butterflies scaling heights of excellence, knowledge, wisdom and virtues.

To conclude, Mr. Brian Duarte in his vote of thanks expressed his gratitude to the Chief Guest for his presence and blessings. He thanked all the dignitaries, the organizing committees, the sound, audiovisual choir, performing artists and audience. Lastly he was grateful to the Manager, Principal and Vice Principal for their constant co-operation and support in making the event a grand success.
